Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors have reportedly discovered their replacement through the game's patch notes, highlighting ongoing tensions over generative AI protections in the video game industry. The issue is central to the dispute between the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and game developers, focusing on the use of AI to replicate voice performances.
Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ), developed by HoYoverse, the creators of Genshin Impact, is not directly affected by the strike as it began development before the strike's commencement on July 25, 2024. However, voice actors can opt out of new contracts to show solidarity with the striking union members or in the absence of a SAG Interim Agreement.
Emeri Chase, the voice behind Soldier 11, stated that their replacement stemmed from a refusal to perform work not covered by a SAG Interim Agreement during the strike, which aims to secure AI protections crucial for the industry's future. Similarly, Nicholas Thurkettle, who voiced Lycaon, was replaced despite not being a union member.
In a Bluesky thread, Chase clarified the distinction between projects "struck" by the union and those not covered by Interim Agreements, noting that many actors are voluntarily withholding work from these projects to support the union's efforts for better AI rights.
Chase expressed disappointment at being replaced, hoping HoYoverse would keep Soldier 11 silent until their return. Both actors learned of their recasting simultaneously with the public. Thurkettle, despite not being SAG-affiliated, emphasized the existential threat AI poses to the industry and stood firm on his decision to seek protections, even at the cost of a significant role.
HoYoverse has yet to comment on the situation, as reported by IGN.
In a related incident in December, Activision recast certain characters in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, notably in the Zombies mode, amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike. Characters such as William Peck and Samantha Maxis were voiced by new actors, prompting concerns from original voice actor Zeke Alton about the impact on his professional reputation due to unclear crediting.
