World of Warcraft's Feast of Winter Veil: A Lore-Filled Holiday Celebration
The annual Feast of Winter Veil in World of Warcraft mirrors our real-world Christmas celebrations, offering players unique rewards and new collectibles each year. A recently released lore video, a collaboration with PlatinumWoW, delves into the rich history of this beloved in-game event.
From its in-game origins to the infamous Metzen the Reindeer kidnappings, the Winter Veil festivities boast a long and entertaining history within Azeroth. The event itself functions much like Christmas, featuring special rewards, activities, and new items added annually.
This new video, narrated by PlatinumWoW, explores the holiday's roots: the Dwarven myth of Greatfather Winter, a Titan-forged giant who leaves a snowy trail; the Tauren's traditions of spiritual reflection, renewal, and gratitude to the Earthmother; and the rise of Smokeywood Pastures, the Goblin enterprise that commercialized Winter Veil, reflecting real-world parallels.
The Legend of Metzen the Reindeer
No exploration of Winter Veil lore is complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after former Warcraft creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has endured three separate kidnappings: by pirates and Dark Iron dwarves in Classic WoW, and later by the Grinch in the current iteration of the game. The video humorously concludes with Metzen, voiced in Thrall's iconic tone (a nod to Metzen's voice acting), expressing gratitude to the viewers.
This collaboration marks another successful partnership between World of Warcraft and PlatinumWoW. Previous collaborations have included lore deep-dives on Nerubians, Vrykul, and the Scourge for Wrath of the Lich King Classic, World Trees and Blackrock Depths for modern WoW, and even helpful guides for events like Season of Discovery and Plunderstorm. Blizzard's recent embrace of content creator partnerships also includes Taliesin & Evitel's returning player guides for Dragonflight, and Hurricane's stunning cinematic trailers for World of Warcraft Classic.
Players can still participate in the Feast of Winter Veil until January 5, 2024. This year's highlights include a tamable Dreaming Festive Reindeer for Hunters, new holiday transmogs for all players, and the Grunch pet. Don't forget to check under the tree in Orgrimmar or Stormwind for a special Winter Veil gift, similar to last year's Junior Timekeeper's Racing Belt toy!
