In the early stages of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy becomes the victim of a tragic assassination. After unraveling the mystery of their own murder, the player learns that Ygwulf, a member of the Paradisan Rebels, is the culprit. The rebels are fiercely opposed to Aedyr's influence in the region, making the Envoy, as the emperor's representative, a prime target. As you track Ygwulf to his underground hideout, you'll need to overcome numerous enemies and engage in some platforming. Be sure to stock up on Health Potions and equip your best gear for this challenging section.
While navigating the dungeon, you may come across documents that shed light on Ygwulf's true intentions and his subsequent remorse. Initially driven by a misguided belief that the Gods required him to kill the Envoy, Ygwulf later realizes his mistake and expresses regret. Even if you don't find these documents, he will explain his change of heart when you confront him. Despite his apologies, Ygwulf is prepared to face justice for his actions.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In?
Choosing to have Ygwulf turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote is the least favorable option. He will face the wrath of the brutal Inquisitor Lödwyn, resulting in a painful death. Moreover, this choice yields fewer rewards compared to sparing him or defeating him in combat. If you decide to spare Ygwulf, he will offer you 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra as a token of gratitude. While these resources are not game-changing, they can still be beneficial. However, sparing him does not change his ultimate fate, as he will be killed later in the story.
Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given that Ygwulf's fate is sealed, opting to attack him during the dialogue and engage in a boss fight is the most advantageous choice. This battle serves as valuable practice for future encounters in *Avowed*. Moreover, defeating Ygwulf grants you the best rewards among the three options. You can loot his body for currency, Adra, and his unique Blackwing armor set. Not only does this armor look impressive, but it also provides significant stealth benefits, including a +30% damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% movement speed increase while crouching, aiding in sneaking past enemies.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed? SPOILER WARNING
Despite being encountered early in the game, Ygwulf's fate subtly influences the ending of *Avowed*. After the final gameplay section, the game's conclusion will feature art and narration highlighting the impact of your decisions on the world of Eora in the Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to unify and bring peace to the region, Ygwulf's death will always occur, further radicalizing the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring their continued violent opposition to your efforts even after the credits roll.
