Disneyland and Walt Disney World are overhauling their Genie+ ride reservation system, launching a revamped experience in July. The updated system, rebranded as "Lightning Lane Multi Pass," will allow guests to book reservations before arriving at the parks, a significant departure from the current same-day booking model. Individual Lightning Lane purchases will be known as "Lightning Lane Single Pass."
The current Genie+, introduced in 2021 as a paid replacement for the complimentary FastPass system, has drawn criticism for its day-of booking requirement. This new system addresses those concerns by allowing advanced planning. Disney resort guests can reserve up to seven days prior to arrival, while other guests can book up to three days ahead.
This enhancement primarily impacts Walt Disney World; Disneyland will primarily see the name change, with booking procedures remaining largely unchanged. The Lightning Lane Multi Pass will combine elements of Genie+ and the former FastPass+ system, aiming to provide more streamlined pre-vacation planning. All existing Genie+ attractions will be included, along with the upcoming Tiana's Bayou Adventure (opening June 28th at Disney World).
The Virtual Queue system, introduced in 2019, will continue as is, allowing guests two attempts per day. This system is currently used for attractions like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run at Walt Disney World, and will be implemented at Disneyland with the Haunted Mansion Holiday reopening later this year.
Disney's adjustments seem to directly address past guest feedback regarding Genie+. The ability to pre-book reservations promises improved trip planning, particularly beneficial during peak seasons and special events. The success of this overhaul, however, remains to be seen.
