- Garena Free City is now open for pre-registration on both iOS and Android devices.
- Pre-registration is currently live for players in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
- The question remains: can this GTA-inspired title carve out its own niche?
Garena Free City, the latest title from the developer's extensive portfolio, has opened pre-registrations for Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. So, what is it exactly? In short, if you've been eagerly awaiting the sixth installment of a certain legendary series, this might help fill the void.
Let's be direct. This is essentially Grand Theft Auto—or Garena's interpretation of it—and its launch is scheduled for June 30th. Whether that's exciting or disappointing depends entirely on your perspective. At first glance, it may appear to be a rather uninspired mobile clone of GTA, but a closer look reveals some genuine potential.
For starters, the game features a surprisingly deep character customization system, allowing you to tweak individual facial features almost like in The Sims. It also doesn't attempt to mimic GTA's realistic aesthetic, instead embracing elements like giant robots and summonable power-ups, including deployable cover.
Bold & BrashThat said, it's equally clear that much of the game is designed to capture the specific appeal of titles like Grand Theft Auto Online. This is a bit of a letdown, as the more unconventional features are what really stand out.
However, Garena's timing for launching Free City might be unfortunate. While no single game can dominate a genre on mobile, the upcoming release of Ananta—which also promises a vast open world and wild side quests—could overshadow Free City by offering even more.
Ananta also feels more distinctive in its approach. That said, its anime-inspired art style may not appeal to everyone. Conversely, Free City's reluctance to fully embrace its own uniqueness is, so far, my main criticism.
