Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt has announced he is taking a sabbatical leave. After his break, he will shift his focus to Arrowhead’s next project. In a recent tweet, Pilestedt reflected on his 11-year dedication to the Helldivers franchise, starting from the original game in 2013 and continuing with Helldivers 2 since early 2016.
Pilestedt shared, “Eleven years of working around the clock on the same IP has made me set aside family, friends, and my lovely wife... and myself. I am going to take some time now to redeem what was lost from all of those that supported me for over a decade.”
He expressed confidence in Arrowhead’s team to keep delivering exceptional content for Helldivers 2 during his absence. Upon his return, Pilestedt will begin working on Arrowhead's next game.
Helldivers 2 catapulted into the spotlight following its explosive launch in February 2024. Despite facing initial challenges, the cooperative shooter became PlayStation Studios’ fastest-selling game ever, selling 12 million copies within just 12 weeks. The game's success has led Sony to develop a movie based on Helldivers 2.
As the face of Helldivers 2, Pilestedt actively engaged with the community on social media, Reddit, and Discord. However, the game's massive success brought with it increased community toxicity, a new challenge for Arrowhead. Pilestedt noted, "The big difference now, which is horrifying, is the amount of threats and rude behavior that people in the studio are getting from some really shitty individuals within the community."
Upon launch, Helldivers 2 encountered significant server issues, which were met with backlash. Arrowhead has since faced ongoing criticism regarding weapon balance and the impact of Premium Warbonds. The most significant controversy arose when Sony attempted to mandate PC gamers to link to a PlayStation Network account, resulting in a review-bombing campaign on Steam. Although Sony reversed this decision, the fallout required a week of Arrowhead's staff time to manage.
Amidst the success of Helldivers 2, Pilestedt transitioned from CEO to chief creative officer to concentrate more on the studio’s games and community. Shams Jorjani, previously an executive at Swedish company Paradox and publisher of Magicka, succeeded Pilestedt as Arrowhead’s CEO.
While details about Arrowhead's next game remain under wraps, it's clear that its release is some time away. In the meantime, Arrowhead continues to support Helldivers 2, recently introducing the third enemy faction, the Illuminate, to keep the game fresh and engaging.
