The DC Universe's new era under James Gunn kicks off with his upcoming Superman movie, marking the start of Phase One titled "Gods and Monsters." According to the filmmaker and DC Studios co-chair, this project plays a pivotal role in establishing the foundation for the entire narrative arc.
"It's absolutely vital," Gunn told Entertainment Weekly in a June 19 interview. "While shows like Creature Commandos are enjoyable, both Peacemaker and Superman serve as crucial building blocks for the larger DCU story."
Gunn emphasized the importance of balancing essential plot elements while keeping casual viewers engaged. The goal is to reward dedicated fans without overwhelming newcomers - because accessibility could turn casual viewers into devoted followers.
"I'm carefully designing each story to stand on its own," Gunn explained. "While interconnected elements enrich the experience, no one should feel lost. This approach might evolve as the universe expands, potentially reaching Avengers: Infinity War-level connectivity, but we're not there yet."
He added, "For now, you won't need to watch Superman to understand Supergirl, though certain elements connect to Peacemaker. Our 'Previously in the DCU' recaps make the television content particularly accessible."
Mark your calendars: Superman arrives in theaters July 8, followed by Peacemaker season 2 on August 21 via Max.
