Minecraft, now a teenager at 15 years old, continues to thrive without any plans for a sequel, as confirmed by Mojang. During a visit to their Stockholm studio, IGN spoke with Ingela Garneij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, who humorously dismissed the idea of a sequel, stating, "Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there's no Minecraft 2."
While Minecraft 2.0 isn't on the cards, the game's evolution is far from over. Mojang has ambitious plans to extend Minecraft's life for at least another 15 years. Garneij, along with Agnes Larsson, the game director of Minecraft Vanilla, are focused on setting a long-term vision and strategy for the game. Their goal is to keep innovating and building upon the robust foundations that Minecraft has established.
However, Garneij acknowledges the challenges posed by the game's age. "I think the age of the game is a challenge," she noted. "It's a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast. So I would say the technology and our age [are our biggest challenges]." Despite this, new content like the Vibrant Visuals graphics update is in the works, though it takes time to implement due to the older technology.
Minecraft remains one of the world's most popular games, showing no signs of slowing down. Mojang has no plans to shift to a free-to-play model or incorporate generative AI technology. So, while players won't see Minecraft 2 anytime soon, the future of the original game looks bright and full of potential.
