Following this morning's Nintendo Switch 2 unveiling, rumors suggesting Joy-Con functionality as a mouse cursor seem increasingly plausible.
The reveal trailer showcases detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface. They connect to flat-bottomed connectors and move like a mouse on a mousepad. A visible slider pad on one connector further supports this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation pointed to an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those in computer mice, enabling this functionality. However, Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed this feature or its implications. Fans envision applications in mouse-and-keyboard-centric games like Civilization, while others anticipate innovative uses within first-party Nintendo titles. The possibilities remain open.
Despite uncertainties regarding mouse support and a new Joy-Con button, several details are confirmed: the system's name is Nintendo Switch 2; its release is slated for 2025; a new Mario Kart is in development; backward compatibility with the original Switch is ensured; and further software announcements are promised in an April Direct.
