  • Square Enix has officially canceled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link
  • The GPS-based action RPG was planned to explore a previously unknown period in the series' timeline
  • Development resources are now fully dedicated to the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV

Square Enix has canceled Missing-Link, the anticipated mobile spin-off of their action RPG series Kingdom Hearts. Following multiple delays—including setbacks to its closed beta testing on Android—the company has decided to halt development and concentrate all efforts on the next main installment, Kingdom Hearts IV.

Missing-Link was set during a lost chapter of the Kingdom Hearts story, blending GPS exploration with action RPG combat. Players would have wielded the series' signature keyblades to battle swarms of monstrous Heartless threatening the world.

The game's GPS integration stood out as a major feature, though its exact implementation remained unclear. While it suggested the ability to virtually visit global locations, the unconventional mechanics may have raised internal concerns during development.

Square Enix canceling mobile titles has become something of a recurring theme. This trend partly stems from their extensive catalog of critically acclaimed games, which can make it challenging for new mobile releases to stand out.

While Japanese audiences often welcome new mobile games, attracting global players remains a hurdle—though the Kingdom Hearts brand likely wouldn't have faced this issue. It's more plausible that the core concept presented development challenges, leading to the decision to prioritize the next major series entry.
