In an insightful interview with Wccftech, the developers of Tides of Annihilation from Eclipse Glow Games discussed the unique choice of Arthurian myths and a London setting for their game. Dive deeper to explore the game's concept and anticipate what's on the horizon.
Tides of Annihilation Aims For A Western Audience
The Central Concept Of Arthurian Myths And Knights
During Gamescom 2024, the team from Eclipse Glow Games sat down with Wccftech to delve into the concept, gameplay mechanics, and the potential for an anthology series of Tides of Annihilation. Despite being based in China, the studio opted for a Western setting due to the strategic direction provided by their financial backer, Tencent. "Tencent invested in both this game and Black Myth: Wukong, with different market targets in mind. While Black Myth: Wukong was designed for the Chinese market, Tides of Annihilation was crafted with a Western audience in mind, leading us to the rich tapestry of Arthurian legends," explained the game's producer. This led to the central theme revolving around knights, eventually focusing on King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
Tides of Annihilation unfolds in a post-apocalyptic modern-day London, devastated by an Outworld invasion, with Gwendolyn emerging as the apparent sole human survivor. The game blends alternate modern settings with fantastical elements drawn directly from Arthurian myths.
Devil May Cry-inspired Combat And Over 30 Bosses
Fans of action-RPGs will immediately recognize the combat style of Tides of Annihilation as reminiscent of the iconic Devil May Cry series. The developers confirmed this influence, stating, "The combat is definitely more like Devil May Cry," yet they've incorporated a difficulty selection feature to cater to a broader audience, including those new to action games. The game offers customizable combat through various playstyles, with four weapons and over ten different Knights to choose from as allies. Gwendolyn discovers her ability to command the legendary Knights of the Round Table, who assist her in navigating a destroyed London to unravel the mystery of the invasion. With over 30 unique bosses to challenge, the game promises engaging and varied gameplay. "Players will need to brace themselves for demanding boss fights," the developers noted.
Plans Of Creating An Anthology
In the same interview, Eclipse Glow Games expressed their ambition to expand the Tides of Annihilation universe into an anthology, potentially exploring different settings and mythologies, each with a new protagonist. "We're keen on retaining the Outworld invasion concept for future titles," they mentioned, aiming to keep this as a unifying theme across the series. The success of the initial game is crucial for bringing more mythologies and titles to life.
Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a tentative 2026 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will embark on an action-adventure journey with Gwendolyn, as she confronts her destiny and strives to save not only London but also the fantastical realm of Avalon, which is increasingly intertwined with the real world.
