Crytek Announces Layoffs Affecting 15% of its Workforce
Game developer Crytek has announced layoffs impacting approximately 60 employees, representing 15% of its 400-person staff. The decision, announced via a tweet and statement from founder Avni Yerli, cites challenging market conditions and the need for financial sustainability.
While the company's successful title, Hunt: Showdown, continues to grow, Crytek states that maintaining its current operational structure is no longer feasible. Following the postponement of Crysis 4 in Q3 2024 and efforts to transition staff to Hunt: Showdown, cost-cutting measures proved insufficient to prevent the layoffs.
The affected employees span various development teams and shared services departments. Crytek has committed to providing severance packages and career support to those impacted.
Yerli's full statement emphasizes the difficult nature of the decision and expresses appreciation for the contributions of its employees. He reiterates Crytek's commitment to the ongoing development and expansion of Hunt: Showdown, along with continued support for its CRYENGINE.
The announcement follows previous reports of a canceled battle royale-inspired Crysis project, codenamed Crysis Next. This project was ultimately scrapped in favor of Crysis 4, which was announced in January 2022 but has seen no further substantial updates since.
The Crysis franchise, known for its visually stunning graphics and demanding system requirements, last saw a mainline release with Crysis 3 in 2013. While remasters of earlier titles have been released, the future of Crysis 4 remains uncertain following this latest development.
