Honor of Kings Unveils Major Esports Plans for 2025
Following its global launch, Honor of Kings is making waves in 2025. Key announcements include a first-ever invitational tournament in the Philippines (February 21st - March 1st) and, most significantly, the global adoption of a ban & pick format for Season Three and all future tournaments.
This global rollout of the ban & pick system marks a significant shift for the game. For the uninitiated, ban & pick means that once a hero is selected by a team in a match, that hero is ineligible for use by that team for the remainder of the tournament. This adds a strategic layer, forcing teams to consider hero availability and player specialization throughout the competition.
The impact on gameplay is substantial. Many MOBA players specialize in a limited roster of heroes, creating interesting strategic choices. Do players prioritize a hero known to excel in a specific situation, even if a teammate is more skilled with that character? Or do they opt for their most mastered hero, risking potential disadvantages later in the tournament? This strategic element promises to elevate the competitive scene and draw in new audiences.
A Strategic Shift
While not the first MOBA to utilize a ban & pick system (games like League of Legends and Rainbow Six Siege employ similar mechanics), Honor of Kings' implementation is unique. Unlike pre-tournament bans agreed upon by teams, Honor of Kings places the decision directly in the hands of individual players, emphasizing teamwork and strategic decision-making. This dynamic element is expected to further enhance the excitement and competitiveness of Honor of Kings esports.
