Horizon Could Be PlayStation’s Big Movie Win if It Stays Faithful to the Games

Author : Hazel Update:Feb 22,2025

Following the successful cinematic adaptation of Uncharted in 2022 and the critically acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie was inevitable. PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures have officially confirmed a film adaptation, promising a faithful recreation of Aloy's origin story and the game's distinctive, machine-populated world. While still in early development, the film has the potential to be Sony's first major video game box office triumph—provided it stays true to the source material.

Recent years have witnessed numerous successful video game adaptations on both the big and small screens. The Super Mario Bros. and Sonic movies, aimed at family audiences, serve as benchmarks for critical acclaim and box office success. On television, Sony's The Last of Us joins Arcane and Fallout as fan favorites. Even adaptations with mixed reviews have achieved financial success; the Uncharted film, starring Tom Holland, grossed over $400 million.

However, challenges remain. While the "video game curse" is largely a thing of the past, faithfulness to the source material is crucial. Uncharted, despite its box office success, deviated significantly from the games. Conversely, Borderlands and Like a Dragon: Yakuza suffered from poor critical and box office performance due to their lack of fidelity to the original games' storylines, lore, and tone.

Horizon's unique robotic ecosystems would be incredible to witness on the big screen.
These failures highlight a broader issue with adaptations. The Witcher, for example, took significant liberties with its source material, altering events, characters, and overall tone. While adaptations require adjustments, these examples demonstrate a departure from the original essence. This disappoints fans—the core audience—and potentially jeopardizes the project's success.

The Horizon movie isn't the first attempt at a screen adaptation. A Netflix series was announced in 2022, along with rumors of a "Horizon 2074" prequel set before the apocalypse. This concept proved divisive among fans, who desired a faithful adaptation of the original game's story and iconic robotic creatures, absent in a pre-apocalyptic setting. Fortunately, the Netflix project is no longer in development, and the focus has shifted to a theatrical release. The increased budget of a Hollywood film is essential for realizing the game's visual potential.

If the Horizon film emulates the success of The Last of Us, it could be PlayStation's first major cinematic win. The success of Fallout, Arcane, and The Last of Us demonstrates the importance of faithfulness to the source material—not just visually, but also in terms of tone and narrative. While The Last of Us introduced new storylines, it remained true to the core narrative structure, resonating with both fans and newcomers.

Remaining faithful to the original game isn't merely about fan service. Horizon Zero Dawn won Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2017 and Outstanding Achievement in Story at the 2018 DICE Awards, highlighting the game's narrative strength. Set in 31st-century North America, the story follows Aloy, a member of the Nora Tribe, as she unravels the mystery of her origins and its connection to Elisabet Sobeck, her doppelganger. Aloy, along with her allies Erend and Varl, and the enigmatic Sylens, are compelling characters within a captivating world. The story explores past attempts to save Earth's climate and the rogue AI that created the robotic creatures.

The unique cultures of Horizon's world could prove as compelling as Avatar's Na'vi tribes.
The intricate worldbuilding, with its unique cultures and settlements, offers rich potential for a film franchise. Similar to Avatar's exploration of Na'vi culture, a Horizon film could delve into the Nora Tribe's survival strategies. The unique combat encounters, featuring creatures like Sawtooths, Tallnecks, and Stormbirds, offer visually stunning action sequences. These elements, combined with rival tribes and the rogue AI Hades, create a compelling narrative ripe for adaptation.

Horizon's compelling story, unique world, and cinematic aesthetic position it for success. The expansive narrative of Forbidden West provides ample material for a long-term franchise. By preserving the elements that made the game successful, Sony can create a film franchise that matches the game's success. This approach could set a precedent for future adaptations of titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers 2. However, deviating from the source material could lead to negative fan reception and financial setbacks. Sony must recognize the potential of Horizon and create a faithful and compelling adaptation.
