Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Steam Deck Review (in Progress) – GOTY Contender, but Play It Elsewhere for Now

Author : Hunter Update:Jan 12,2025

This in-depth review explores the highly anticipated Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, examining its performance and features across both Steam Deck and PS5. The author, a seasoned Warhammer 40,000 gamer, shares their experiences after approximately 22 hours of gameplay.

The review is currently a work in progress, primarily due to the need for comprehensive testing of cross-platform multiplayer and online functionality on public servers. Furthermore, official Steam Deck support is expected later this year, promising further optimization. The author has already tested the game's performance on Proton GE 9-9 and Proton Experimental.

The author praises the game's stunning visuals and visceral combat, noting the satisfying melee combat and impressive enemy swarms. The campaign is enjoyable both solo and in co-op, although defense missions are less appealing. The game's co-op mode is likened to a high-budget reimagining of Xbox 360 era co-op shooters, providing a compelling and addictive experience.

The PS5 version, running in 4K mode on a 1440p monitor, showcases exceptional environmental detail and impressive lighting effects. A robust photo mode offers extensive customization options, although some minor visual glitches were observed on Steam Deck using FSR 2 and lower resolutions. The PS5 version's photo mode is described as exceptional. Audio is highlighted as top-tier, with superb voice acting and sound design, though the music, while good, lacks standout tracks for repeated listening outside the game.

The PC port, tested on Steam Deck, boasts extensive graphics options, including display mode, resolution, render resolution, quality presets (Quality, Balanced, Performance, Ultra Performance), resolution upscaling (TAA, FSR 2), dynamic resolution target, v-sync, brightness, motion blur, and FPS limit. DLSS and FSR 2 support are present at launch, with FSR 3 planned post-launch. The author also hopes for future 16:10 support.

Control options include keyboard and mouse, along with full controller support, including adaptive triggers and PlayStation button prompts (after disabling Steam Input). The DualSense controller's adaptive triggers function wirelessly on PC.

Steam Deck performance, while technically playable without configuration changes, falls short of ideal. Maintaining a stable 30fps at 1280x800 with low settings and FSR 2.0 is challenging, with frequent frame rate dips. Dynamic upscaling for a 30fps target also experiences significant drops. The author hopes for future performance improvements.

Online multiplayer functionality on Steam Deck is confirmed as working flawlessly, with successful co-op sessions tested across different geographical locations. However, further testing with public servers and random players is pending.

The PS5 version provides a smooth experience in performance mode, though dynamic resolution/upscaling is noted. Fast load times and PS5 Activity Card support are praised. Gyro support is currently absent.

Cross-save progression between Steam and PS5 is confirmed, although a two-day cooldown period exists between syncs.

The author expresses a desire for future updates to include HDR support and haptic feedback on the DualSense controller.

Overall, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is considered a strong contender for Game of the Year, with exceptional gameplay, visuals, and audio. However, the Steam Deck performance currently limits its recommendation on that platform. The PS5 version receives a strong recommendation, pending further multiplayer testing. A final score will be provided after additional testing and potential patches.
