WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience
2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvements with WWE 2K25. Promising additions include "The Island," a new online world; revamped story, GM, and Universe modes; a "Bloodline Rules" hardcore match type; and more. However, a recent preview focused primarily on the core gameplay (largely unchanged) and the updated Showcase Mode.
Showcase Mode: A Step Forward
This year's Showcase Mode chronicles the Anoa'i family, featuring Roman Reigns and The Bloodline, alongside legends like The Wild Samoans and The Rock. It offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and—most intriguingly—altering history. The hands-on experience included recreating Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins bout. While enjoyable, the mode still has minor issues.
Addressing Past Criticisms
The over-reliance on lengthy real-life footage ("Slingshot") from previous entries has been significantly reduced. Key moments are now recreated in-engine, resulting in a smoother, more engaging experience. While complete control wasn't maintained during the Nia Jax match's conclusion, this is a marked improvement. The checklist system, while present, is refined with optional timed objectives offering cosmetic rewards without penalties for failure. The ability to alter historical match outcomes adds a fresh layer of enjoyment.
Gameplay Enhancements
Core gameplay remains largely consistent, retaining the satisfying grappling action of WWE 2K24. However, notable additions include the return of chain wrestling, a mini-game adding strategic depth to the initial grapple. The submission mini-game also returns, though it's optional, as are other quick-time events. Weapon throwing returns with an expanded roster and new environments, including the WWE archives. Intergender gameplay is finally introduced, along with a massive roster of over 300 wrestlers.
New Match Type: Underground
A new "Underground" match type, a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting with lumberjacks, was briefly showcased. Further details will be revealed later.
Overall Impression
WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with smart, incremental improvements. While the core gameplay remains largely unchanged, the enhancements to Showcase Mode and the introduction of new features like chain wrestling and intergender matches make it a worthwhile upgrade. The full impact of the unplayed modes will determine its ultimate standing, but initial impressions are positive.
