Dondoko Island: From Humble Beginnings to Expansive Minigame
Leveraging Past Assets for Rapid Development
In a recent interview with Automaton, Michiko Hatoyama, lead designer, explained that Dondoko Island's scope significantly expanded during development. Initially conceived as a smaller feature, the minigame blossomed thanks to the addition of numerous furniture recipes.
This expansion was achieved through the strategic reuse and modification of existing assets from the Yakuza series' extensive library. Hatoyama highlighted the team's ability to create individual furniture pieces "in a matter of minutes," a stark contrast to the days or even months typically required for new asset creation.
The decision to expand Dondoko Island and its furniture options stemmed from a desire to enhance player enjoyment. The larger island and diverse furniture selection provide players with greater freedom and satisfaction in transforming the dilapidated island into a luxurious resort.
Released on January 25, 2024, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the ninth mainline entry in the Yakuza series (excluding spin-offs), boasts a rich asset library. This wealth of resources allowed RGG Studio to create a surprisingly large-scale minigame in Dondoko Island, offering players countless hours of immersive gameplay. The efficient use of existing assets is a testament to the studio's resourcefulness and commitment to player experience.
