The iconic Killzone franchise, a cornerstone of Sony's gaming portfolio, has been dormant for quite some time. Now, in an exciting development, Killzone composer Joris de Man has voiced his support for its revival in a new interview with VideoGamer for the PlayStation: The Concert Tour. De Man acknowledges the fan-driven petitions and expresses his hope for the return of this beloved series, noting its iconic status while also recognizing the challenges it might face.
"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man stated. "I think it's tricky because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
The format of Killzone's potential return remains open to interpretation. De Man suggests that a remastered collection might be more successful than a new entry, considering the current gaming landscape. "I think a remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he remarked. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."
Killzone games are known for their slower-paced, weightier shooting mechanics, which contrast sharply with fast-paced franchises like Call of Duty. Killzone 2, in particular, was criticized for its input lag on the PlayStation 3, which affected its responsiveness. The series is also celebrated for its dark, gritty, and atmospheric visuals and tone.
In a recent interview with the Washington Post, it appeared that Sony-owned developer Guerrilla had moved on to focus on the Horizon series, suggesting a possible end to Killzone's development. Nonetheless, it's been over a decade since the last Killzone entry, Shadow Fall, and the prospect of reviving Killzone—or even another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—remains enticing for many fans. With Joris de Man's endorsement, the hope for Killzone's return gains another supporter.
