George R.R. Martin has hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his potential involvement. The Game of Thrones creator helped develop the world and history of FromSoftware's Elden Ring, a 2022 bestseller. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco heavily featured Martin's contribution in promotional materials, crediting both Miyazaki and Martin for the game's world creation.
While sidestepping questions about an Elden Ring sequel, Martin revealed discussions about a film adaptation during IGN Fan Fest 2025: "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring." This isn't the first such tease; FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has also expressed openness to an adaptation, provided a strong partner collaborates. Miyazaki stated, "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example…But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play."
However, Martin highlighted a major constraint: his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. He stated, "We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The long-awaited sixth installment in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series continues to face delays, with Martin himself acknowledging the possibility it may never be completed. He commented in December, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late…But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me."
Martin further elaborated on his Elden Ring contribution, explaining his role in world-building: FromSoftware sought a rich backstory for the game's present-day action. He provided concepts for the world's history, magic, and runes, collaborating with the team over several sessions. He noted that there's always more material generated during world-building than ultimately appears in the final product, similar to the extensive background lore in Tolkien's works. He confirmed that unused material exists, potentially suitable for future installments.
