The Blood of Dawnwalker recently debuted its much-anticipated reveal trailer, which showcased a mix of pre-rendered scenes and brief gameplay snippets. This trailer reinforces the game's earlier teased similarities to The Witcher, while also hinting at Persona-like elements.
Developed by Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio established by ex-CD Projekt Red developers who contributed to The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, The Blood of Dawnwalker was first announced as Dawnwalker in January 2024. It was described as a narrative-driven open-world RPG set in a dark fantasy world with impactful choices.
On January 13, 2025, Rebel Wolves, in partnership with publisher Bandai Namco, streamed a reveal event culminating in an over four-minute cinematic trailer. This trailer not only set the stage for the game's dark fantasy environment but also introduced the Dawnwalkers—a powerful vampire-like race within the game's universe—and the protagonist, Coen, who transforms into a Dawnwalker early in the story.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Reveal Trailer Is Reminiscent of The Witcher
The game's dark fantasy backdrop, presence of monsters, and its open-world RPG format with morally gray choices closely echo The Witcher. The tagline "the world needs what it fears" further amplifies these similarities. Fans of The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine expansion, with its vampires and tough choices, are likely to find The Blood of Dawnwalker intriguing. The game incorporates a morality system that allows players to decide whether Coen should embrace his Dawnwalker nature to rescue his family or hold onto his humanity.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Also Takes a Page From Persona's Book
Beyond its Witcher-like qualities, The Blood of Dawnwalker innovates by integrating Persona-style time management mechanics. Each quest in the game consumes time, compelling players to strategically choose how to spend it. "There are multiple approaches to saving Coen’s family with no clear division between main and side quests; you decide on how you spend the time," explained Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, co-founder and game director at Rebel Wolves. This design aims to enhance replayability, making each playthrough unique, and is referred to as a "narrative sandbox."
The Blood of Dawnwalker is currently being developed for PC and next-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Envisioned as the inaugural entry in a planned trilogy, it is set to be published by Bandai Namco. While a specific release date remains undisclosed, and a launch window is still pending, given its start in 2022 and its AAA budget, a release before 2027 seems unlikely. Rebel Wolves has promised a gameplay reveal in the summer of 2025.
