Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists
Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan adventure, is set to launch February 14th. This latest installment introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour system and features dual protagonists with distinct playstyles.
A New Approach to Parkour:
Ubisoft has significantly redesigned the parkour mechanics. Gone is the free-climbing of previous titles; Shadows introduces designated "parkour highways" for traversal. While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, requiring only a strategic approach. These pre-defined routes are carefully designed for optimal flow and player experience.
The system also boasts seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish and fluid transitions. Players can now smoothly disengage from ledges, performing acrobatic maneuvers instead of the traditional ledge-grabbing descent. A new prone position adds to the agility, enabling diving during sprints alongside sliding. The design choice behind these changes, according to Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois, allowed for more control over character movement, differentiating Naoe's shinobi abilities from Yasuke's limitations.
Dual Protagonists, Dual Playstyles:
Shadows introduces two playable characters: Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and shadow maneuvers; and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but unable to climb. This dual protagonist structure aims to appeal to both fans of classic stealth gameplay and those who prefer the RPG-style combat seen in titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.
Release and Competition:
Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from other highly anticipated releases that month, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. The coming weeks will undoubtedly reveal more details about this promising title.
