Dynasty Warriors: Origins Devs Urged to Challenge Players

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Dev Team Was Challenged to Intensify Combat

Dynasty Warriors: Origins presents more formidable enemy encounters this time, as producer Tomohiko Sho urged his development team with a bold directive: "Go and kill the player." Discover how this philosophy shaped the combat experience in the franchise's latest installment.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins Features More Challenging Enemy Forces

Directive: Terminate The Player

Dynasty Warriors: Origins combat difficulty increased by design

The action combat in Dynasty Warriors: Origins reaches new intensity levels, with enemies delivering more aggressive and tactical assaults. Producer Tomohiko Sho candidly revealed his development mantra during production: "This time, our goal is to eliminate players."

During a PlayStation.Blog interview, Sho explained the philosophy behind the enhanced difficulty. The development team aimed to create battlefield authenticity - soldiers and commanders should threaten players realistically, as all combatants fight for survival. However, Sho emphasized maintaining balanced challenge rather than unfair frustration.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins maintains satisfaction despite challenge

"We designed challenges that deliver genuine accomplishment," Sho noted. "Even action game beginners can progress through systematic learning and feel rewarding success." The team faced significant design challenges merging Dynasty Warriors' signature "one versus thousands" exhilaration with realistic battlefield dynamics where every opponent presents a potential threat.

Revisiting The Foundations

Dynasty Warriors: Origins marks franchise naming evolution

Origins breaks tradition as the first non-numbered mainline entry in the Dynasty Warriors series. Conventionally, this title would have been Dynasty Warriors 10. The naming shift reflects the game's focused narrative approach, covering only the first half of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

In a Tokyo Game Show interview with TheGamer, Sho revealed Origins concludes with the climactic Battle of Chibi (Red Cliffs). "We concentrated on delivering this epic period with unprecedented depth and intensity," he explained. This narrative focus differs from previous franchise entries that spanned the entire Three Kingdoms saga.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins introduces new protagonist

After a seven-year hiatus for main series releases, Origins introduces an original protagonist - the Nameless Hero - navigating the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Players experience China's power struggles through this new warrior's perspective when various factions battle for supremacy.

Currently available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, Dynasty Warriors: Origins launched on January 17th to continue the acclaimed hack-and-slash legacy.
