Palworld's unexpected financial triumph has positioned Pocketpair, its developer, for a potential leap beyond AAA game development. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has outlined a different strategic path for the studio. Let's delve into his reasoning.
Palworld's Profits: Beyond AAA Potential?
Pocketpair's Focus: Indie Games and Community Engagement
The creature-catching survival game, Palworld, has exceeded all expectations, generating substantial profits for Pocketpair. These profits are significant enough to fund a project surpassing even AAA game standards. Yet, CEO Takuro Mizobe has reiterated his reluctance to pursue such a large-scale venture.
In a recent GameSpark interview, Mizobe revealed Palworld's sales are in the "tens of billions of yen"—approximately tens of millions of USD. Despite this windfall, he believes Pocketpair lacks the structure and experience to manage a project of that magnitude.
Mizobe explained that Palworld's development was financed by profits from previous titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon. However, he's chosen not to replicate this model, believing the company isn't yet ready for such a massive undertaking.
"Developing our next game with these proceeds would create a project exceeding AAA scale, but our organizational maturity isn't suited for it," Mizobe stated. He prefers to focus on projects he finds "interesting as indie games," rather than large-budget productions.
The studio aims for sustainable growth within the indie sphere, leveraging improved game engines and industry conditions that allow for global success without massive teams. Mizobe credits the indie gaming community for Pocketpair's success and emphasizes the studio's commitment to giving back.
Palworld's Expansion into New Mediums
Mizobe previously stated that Pocketpair isn't interested in expanding its team or upgrading its facilities. Instead, the focus is on diversifying the Palworld IP through various mediums.
Palworld, currently in early access, has garnered significant praise for its engaging gameplay and consistent updates. Recent additions include a PvP arena and a new island in the Sakurajima update. Furthermore, Pocketpair has established Palworld Entertainment in collaboration with Sony to manage global licensing and merchandising.
