Avowed's director unveils intricate gameplay and multiple endings in a recent preview, highlighting the game's anticipated 2025 release.
Avowed: Deep Gameplay and Diverse Outcomes
Navigating Political Intrigue in the Living Lands
Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed promises players a deeply immersive experience, offering "constant opportunities to shape your character's path" through its complex, multi-ending gameplay. Game director Carrie Patel emphasizes the significance of every decision, stating that even seemingly minor choices contribute to a cohesive and personalized narrative.
"It's about providing players with continuous opportunities to express and explore their character's alignment," Patel explains. "The game encourages reflection on your experience, prompting questions like, 'When am I engaged? When am I curious? When does my interest wane? What keeps me invested?'"
Patel further explains that outcomes in Avowed are directly tied to exploration and discovery within the vast world of Eora, particularly in the politically charged Living Lands. "I've enjoyed weaving together the narratives of these two interconnected realms," she adds.
Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay comes from giving players rich content to explore," Patel notes. "It's about defining who you want to be in this world and how the game's situations allow you to express that identity."
Beyond its intricate RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapon combinations you choose drastically alter each playthrough," Patel confirms.
In a separate interview with IGN, Patel confirmed the existence of numerous endings, each a unique combination of player choices. "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, and they can combine in many ways," she explains. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encountered and your actions within it."
