The upcoming *Lies of P* DLC, titled *Overture*, is set to bring a significant and long-awaited change to the game: the introduction of difficulty options. This marks the first time players will be able to adjust the challenge level in what has traditionally been marketed as a hardcore "Soulslike" experience.
Known for its punishing difficulty, *Lies of P* has often posed a steep challenge for newcomers—especially those drawn to the game more for its dark narrative and gothic setting than for its intense combat mechanics. When the game originally launched, director Jiwon Choi made it clear that the team at Neowiz believed difficulty settings weren't necessary for Soulslike games, sticking firmly to the genre's traditional roots.
However, it seems the studio has reevaluated its stance. In a recent interview with VGC, Choi explained that the decision to add difficulty options came after the development team took player feedback into serious consideration. “We wanted to make sure a wider audience of players could play the game,” he said. “We have a lot of feedback from customers and from our developers. So by making development adjustments and introducing these difficulty options, we can offer the experience to different types of players. This broadens the base.”
Player Reactions Are Mixed
As expected, the announcement has sparked debate within the community. Some players are supportive of the move, acknowledging that not everyone comes into gaming with years of experience or high-level skills. One player shared: “I got into gaming around the age of 24. I'm using the easier difficulty settings because, as much as I love *Lies of P*, I have a major skill issue, and that's okay. I just thought it would be nice hearing why someone would reasonably want the difficulty settings. I never got to own any systems when I was a kid, so now I can as a working adult who doesn't have 10+ years of skills.”
Another player chimed in with a critical view on the typical resistance to such changes: “Souls elitists don't want difficulty because they like bragging about their video game achievements. I'm glad *Lies of P* is not servicing them.”
Still, not all reactions have been positive. On Steam discussion forums and social media platforms, some fans expressed disappointment over the inclusion of difficulty settings. One user wrote: “Was interested in playing, but after all the nerfs and adding difficulty levels, I lost interest. Game devs, please stop catering to babies.” However, most replies to that thread voiced support for the developer’s new direction.
Another user lamented the change: “You had a masterpiece on your hands Neowitz, and you turned it into laughing stock. For shame.” Meanwhile, a separate thread titled "Difficulty settings = Not playing" sits alongside another post from a player who actually tried the game and simply stated: "difficulty is just ridiculous."
What Lies Ahead in Overture

*Lies of P: Overture* promises to expand the already rich world of the base game with new environments, enemies, bosses, characters, and weapons. The DLC also introduces Death March mode—a fresh challenge that lets players face off against the game's toughest bosses once again. According to Neowiz, experienced players can expect to spend approximately 15–20 hours completing the DLC, which becomes available after reaching a specific chapter in the main story.
This expansion is just one piece of a larger vision, as Neowiz has already confirmed plans for a full sequel to *Lies of P*. The original title received strong praise upon release, earning an 8/10 from IGN, which noted: “*Lies of P* might not branch out particularly far from its soulslike inspiration, but it plays the part extremely well.”
