Housemarque has unveiled Saros, the eagerly anticipated successor to their 2022 roguelite hit, Returnal. Featuring the talented Rahul Kohli, Saros is set to launch in 2026 exclusively for the PlayStation 5, with enhancements tailored for the PS5 Pro.
The game was showcased during the latest PlayStation State of Play, and it unmistakably bears the signature of Housemarque. In Saros, players step into the shoes of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer on a quest for answers on a perilous, ever-changing planet shrouded in the mystery of an eclipse and menaced by at least one colossal, powerful entity. The game's atmosphere and the mantra "come back stronger" resonate deeply with the roguelike genre, while the spectacular spread of fireballs hints at Housemarque's well-known affinity for bullet-hell mechanics.
Creative director Gregory Louden describes **Saros** as the "ultimate evolution" of Housemarque's gameplay-centric approach. While it introduces a fresh single-player IP, it builds upon the foundation laid by **Returnal**'s third-person action dynamics. However, Saros isn't merely a rehash of Returnal. In a detailed post on the PlayStation Blog, Louden highlights a significant gameplay differentiation: Saros incorporates permanent resources and progression. Though the world shifts upon the player's death, players can now permanently enhance their weapons and suits, adding a new layer of depth and strategy to the gameplay.
More details are slated to emerge later this year, with Housemarque planning to unveil an extended gameplay demonstration.
