Discover the intriguing world of The Duskbloods, where players take on the role of Bloodsworn. This is not Bloodborne 2, but a unique title from FromSoftware. Dive into the game's features and FromSoftware's future plans.
FromSoftware Will Continue To Create Single-Player Focused Games
The Duskbloods Director on Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice Blog
FromSoftware, the creators behind the critically acclaimed Elden Ring, have reassured fans that they will continue crafting their signature single-player experiences, despite branching into multiplayer games. Announced during the Nintendo Direct on April 2, The Duskbloods is an upcoming exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, blending online multiplayer PvPvE with the studio's renowned Soulslike themes and aesthetics. This announcement comes alongside another multiplayer project, Elden Ring Nightreign.
In a recent post on Nintendo's insider blog, Creator’s Voice, on April 4, FromSoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki addressed concerns about their focus on multiplayer games. He clarified, "As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward." He further emphasized their commitment to single-player games, stating, "The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Elden Ring was also announced, and we still intend to actively develop single-player focused games such as this that embrace our more traditional style."
The Importance of Blood in The Duskbloods
Miyazaki shared insights into The Duskbloods' thematic focus on blood. Players assume the role of "Bloodsworn," individuals with superhuman abilities derived from special blood. He likened them to vampires but noted that they would not be portrayed as traditional monstrous figures.
The game centers around the quest for "The First Blood," which emerges during "The Twilight of Humanity," an event signaling the end of human society across various times and places.
Miyazaki described the game's settings, which include Gothic and Victorian maps alongside scenes from the early modern period, such as a train running through a landscape shown in the trailer.
He emphasized that blood in The Duskbloods represents a conceptual element, symbolizing the game's themes of history, power, fate, and transcending human limitations. He stated, "Blood symbolizes one of the game’s key themes—the history it holds, the power it passes on, the fates it weaves and the marker of those who have surpassed the limitations of their own humanity."
Wide Variety of Characters and Online Multiplayer
The Duskbloods trailer showcased a diverse array of characters, each with unique designs and personalities. Miyazaki confirmed over a dozen customizable characters for players to choose from, stating, "I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them."
The game features a central "hub" where players can select and customize their characters before entering online multiplayer sessions that support up to 8 players. After each match, players return to the hub to collect rewards, primarily character customization items.
Matches typically conclude with a last player standing, though some may have different victory conditions, such as defeating a formidable boss or meeting specific challenges.
Miyazaki explained, "Regardless of whether it’s PvP or PvE, the idea is to provide players with an experience that allows them to learn and hone their skills as they play. We’ve therefore designed the PvE boss encounters to present a tough challenge and a sense of accomplishment upon defeating them."
He also introduced the concept of "roles" within the game, where players can have specific duties and objectives. Examples include "Destined Rivals," where players must find and defeat their rival, and "Destined Companion," where forming a bond with a partner leads to special rewards.
Miyazaki elaborated, "Roles can be assigned to any character via blood customization, allowing players to enjoy role-playing in a literal sense and hopefully adding to the drama of these engagements."
