Keiichiro Toyama's New Horror-Action Game, Slitterhead: Fresh, Original, and Maybe a Little Rough
Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama is crafting a unique experience with his upcoming horror-action game, Slitterhead, launching November 8th. While acknowledging the game might have a few imperfections, Toyama emphasizes its commitment to fresh and original ideas.
Toyama's dedication to innovation, even at the cost of some polish, is a hallmark of his career, dating back to the original Silent Hill. His latest project, developed by Bokeh Game Studio, boldly blends horror and action in a raw, experimental style. This marks a significant return to the horror genre for Toyama, following his 2008 title, Siren: Blood Curse.
"From the very first ‘Silent Hill,’ we have maintained a commitment to freshness and originality, even if it means being a bit rough around the edges," Toyama stated in a GameRant interview. This philosophy, he assures, is central to Slitterhead.
The "rough around the edges" comment might be attributed to Bokeh Game Studio's smaller size (11-50 employees) compared to large AAA developers. However, the team boasts industry veterans like producer Mika Takahashi, character designer Tatsuya Yoshikawa, and composer Akira Yamaoka. Coupled with the promising gameplay fusion of Gravity Rush and Siren, Slitterhead's originality is undeniable. The true impact of any "rough edges" remains to be seen.
Kowlong: A City Steeped in Mystery
Slitterhead unfolds in the fictional city of Kowlong (a blend of Kowloon and Hong Kong), a 1990s-inspired Asian metropolis infused with supernatural elements. Inspired by seinen manga like Gantz and Parasyte, the city provides a chilling backdrop.
Players embody a "Hyoki," a spirit capable of possessing bodies to combat terrifying "Slitterheads"—grotesque, unpredictable creatures that morph from human to monstrous forms, blending horror and a touch of the bizarre.
