Microsoft's evolving multiplatform strategy is evident in its recent Xbox showcases, which now prominently feature PlayStation 5 logos alongside Xbox platforms for certain games. This marks a significant shift from Microsoft's June 2024 showcase, where PS5 announcements were often delayed or omitted from initial reveals, as seen with Doom: The Dark Ages and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The January 2025 showcase, however, showcased a different approach.
This contrasts sharply with Sony and Nintendo's continued focus on their own platforms. Recent showcases from both companies largely avoided mentioning competing consoles, even for multiplatform titles. For example, Monster Hunter Wilds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance were presented solely with PlayStation branding, despite also releasing on other platforms.
In an interview with XboxEra, Phil Spencer explained this change as a commitment to transparency and reaching a wider audience. He acknowledged the logistical challenges of coordinating assets across platforms but emphasized the importance of showcasing games wherever they're available. While acknowledging platform differences, Spencer reiterated that the focus remains on game accessibility.
Spencer's statement suggests a continued inclusion of PS5 (and potentially future Nintendo Switch) logos in future Xbox showcases. Therefore, Microsoft's June 2025 showcase might feature titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and Call of Duty with prominent PS5 branding alongside Xbox. However, it's unlikely Sony and Nintendo will reciprocate this approach.
