Core Mechanics Began With Experimental Goomba Designs

Nintendo has unveiled an original Switch prototype build of Donkey Kong Bananza. While the game now serves as a Switch 2 showcase title, this early version demonstrates initial technical solutions before hardware upgrades.
Development started in 2019 at Nintendo EPD Tokyo, focusing on creating persistent environmental alteration systems. The team initially prototyped these mechanics using a surprising test subject: a Goomba character model equipped with oversized arms.

"Yes, we really did that," chuckled Game Director Wataru Tanaka. "Inspired by Super Mario Odyssey's Knucklotec boss fight, our programmers grafted giant arms onto a Goomba for testing. This crude prototype could smash terrain, rip off environmental chunks as weapons, and hurl them at targets."
This early version ran exclusively on Switch 1 development kits, featuring compressed textures, reduced foliage density, and shorter draw distances. The team used this foundation to establish level layouts, destruction physics, and animation systems before later hardware advantages became available.
Switch 2 Hardware Enables Full Creative Vision

The project's pivotal moment came in early 2021 when development transitioned to Switch 2 hardware. This upgrade enabled:
- True voxel-based destruction systems
- Seamless world streaming
- Enhanced dynamic lighting and sound
- Advanced companion AI for cooperative play
The hardware shift transformed terrain deformation from a visual novelty to a fundamental gameplay element, allowing the team to properly realize Donkey Kong's massive movements and environmental interactions.

"We focused first on enhancing our original Switch framework for Switch 2 capabilities," explained Art Director Daisuke Watanabe. "The most immediate benefit was dramatically increased environmental density. More interactive objects didn't just improve visuals - they deepened gameplay systems."
The game's narrative centers on the villainous VoidCo organization, led by Void Kong, Grumpy Kong, and Poppy Kong. These antagonists control the island's Banandium Gems while pursuing a legendary power source hidden deep underground.
As players uncover various subterranean ecosystems, they encounter multi-stage boss fights tied to VoidCo's forces and elemental themes. The game's destruction systems create meaningful strategy - collapsed terrain reveals hidden paths while environmental hazards respond uniquely to each biome's characteristics.

Game Director Kazuya Takahashi elaborated, "We prioritized continuity throughout the experience. Consider the Hand Slap move - while destructive, it doubles as sonar that reveals buried objects. Breaking through walls might expose fossils that lead to hidden chambers with additional discoveries."
