Genshin Backlash Leaves Devs Feeling Defeated and HoYoverse CEO Liu Wei recently revealed the significant impact of negative player feedback on the Genshin Impact development team. This candid admission sheds light on a challenging year for the game and its creators.

Genshin Impact Developers Overwhelmed by Negative Fan Response

Team Remains Dedicated to Improvement and Player Feedback

(c) SentientBamboo In a recent Shanghai event, Liu Wei addressed the "anxiety and confusion" within the Genshin Impact team stemming from intense criticism over the past year. The period surrounding Lunar New Year 2024 and subsequent updates proved particularly turbulent, marked by growing player dissatisfaction.

According to a translated recording by SentientBamboo on YouTube, Wei described the impact of the negative feedback: "The past year has been filled with anxiety and confusion for both the Genshin team and myself. We faced incredibly difficult times. The volume and intensity of criticism made the entire team feel utterly useless."

Genshin Backlash Leaves Devs Feeling Defeated and This statement followed a string of controversies related to recent updates, including the 4.4 Lantern Rite event. Player disappointment over the meager rewards (three intertwined fates) fueled a significant backlash.

Many players expressed frustration with the perceived lack of substantial updates compared to other HoYoverse titles like Honkai: Star Rail, resulting in a surge of negative reviews. Comparisons with Kuro Games' Wuthering Waves, particularly regarding gameplay and character movement, also contributed to the criticism.

Further fueling the discontent was the 4.5 Chronicled Banner's gacha mechanics, viewed unfavorably against traditional Event Banners. Concerns about the portrayal of characters inspired by real-world cultures, with accusations of "whitewashing" or misrepresentation, added another layer to the criticism.

Genshin Backlash Leaves Devs Feeling Defeated and While visibly emotional, Wei acknowledged these concerns: "Some felt our team was arrogant and unresponsive. But as Aquaria [presenter] pointed out, we're gamers too. We understand these feelings. The sheer volume of criticism overwhelmed us; we needed to regain perspective and identify the genuine player concerns."

Despite the setbacks, Liu expressed optimism for the future, reaffirming the team's commitment to improvement and community engagement. "We know we can't satisfy everyone. But the past year, while challenging, also brought us courage and trust from our players. Moving forward, I hope the Genshin team and players alike can leave the past behind and collaboratively create the best possible experience."

In other news, a preview for the Natlan region was recently released, offering a glimpse of the upcoming content. Natlan's official launch is scheduled for August 28th.
